The sprawling narrative on Made in Abyss (2017) is sincere in its originality, yet entirely generic in its adventure therein. To explain, Made in Abyss often messily incorporates messy explanations; sometimes they are effective, such as the relationship between the main character’s father - and why she ultimately starts down the abyss. However, other times they present nothing: such as her relationship (while trapped inside a science experiment) between a nothing character whose arc concludes satisfactory. That is the problem with Made in Abyss: its inconsistency. The adventure feels as much an adventure as an amusement ride feels a day well spent.
