Five Centimeters per Second (2007) is an important landmark in Makoto Shinkai’s career, where he successfully created a cliche and nuanced attempt at existential depression, is but a subtlety rather than a forefront; where each character struggles with understanding the future, which coinciding with: separation (practical example) for the first girl, and relational detachment between our main character and the second (girl). Maximum pathos is generated by the audio-neurosis in the ending, creating a memorable (and recent) result.
Your Name. (2016) conveys conventional sit-com-esque styles and interactions, yet creates a full-fledged drama worthy in quality to that of Ghibli (no more no less). Small samples in each style - psychology, art-house animation, time travel mechanics - while inconsistent, creates a variety of appreciation for any audience.
